In a testament to their commitment to building strong communities, the Ford Motor Company Fund (Ford Fund), the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, has taken a giant stride forward. Their recent announcement of a $2.3 million investment in mobility solutions aimed at alleviating hunger in cities with Ford manufacturing plants has stirred waves of hope in the battle against food insecurity.

Ford Motor Company, renowned for employing the highest number of UAW-represented autoworkers in the nation, has always held a strong ethos of supporting local causes within its 24 U.S. plant communities. This unwavering philanthropic spirit is now propelling them to make a difference in cities where their manufacturing presence stands tall.

The statistics paint a grim picture: more than 34 million Americans, among them 9 million children, are grappling with food insecurity today. As the nation observes Hunger Action Month this September, Ford Fund is rolling out an inspiring initiative. They have joined hands with food banks, DoorDash, and Feeding America to extend a helping hand to individuals and families grappling with hunger, facilitating their access to essential nourishment through mobile delivery services. The key to this endeavor lies in the innovative deployment of mobility solutions, bridging the divide between transportation and food access.

Luisa Schumacher, Senior Manager of Essential Services at Ford Fund, expresses the urgency of the situation: "More and more people are facing hunger across the U.S. today, causing an unprecedented strain on families and food banks across the country. We are committed to working shoulder to shoulder with local organizations to address the rise in food insecurity and reach more people in our Ford communities."

In this groundbreaking move, Ford Fund is allocating $320,000 to local food banks in Detroit, Louisville, Memphis, and West Tennessee. These funds will serve as a lifeline to amplify meal access through home delivery. Collaborating with DoorDash's Project DASH, Ford Fund's investment will empower food banks and food pantries, harnessing the logistics prowess of DoorDash to expand their reach in local communities.

DoorDash, a pioneering force in the mobile food delivery sector, stands at the forefront of this endeavor. Dashers, the dedicated drivers of DoorDash, will deliver food and fresh produce from participating food banks to nearly 2,500 households each month. This includes catering to individuals and families with limited transportation options, thereby leaving no one behind in the fight against hunger.

The list of participating food banks in this initiative includes Dare to Care Food Bank in Louisville, Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan, and Mid-South Food Bank in Western Tennessee.

But the commitment of Ford Fund doesn't stop here. An impressive $1.25 million in innovation grants are in the pipeline for Feeding America food banks in Ford's home-base communities later this year. These grants will enable food banks to develop and scale innovative mobility solutions that tackle food insecurities, particularly in areas where fresh food is otherwise scarce. The participating food banks will be strategically located in upstate New York, Illinois, Ohio, Southeast Michigan, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas, and South Florida.

Furthermore, Ford Fund will direct the remaining investments toward partnerships with Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan, Fishes and Loaves in Southeast Michigan, Detroit Food Academy, The Salvation Army Bed and Bread Club, and Eastern Market in Detroit.

In a world where corporate social responsibility has taken center stage, Ford Motor Company Fund is driving change where it's needed most—in the hearts and homes of the communities they call home. Their commitment to combating hunger through innovative mobility solutions is not just an investment; it's a testament to their enduring dedication to building a better tomorrow for all. As we look ahead, we can only hope that more corporations follow in their footsteps, driving change one community at a time.
