In a pioneering collaboration, Ford and Resideo Technologies, Inc. have embarked on an ambitious joint simulation project, christened the “EV-Home Power Partnership.” This venture aims to delve into the realms of vehicle-to-home (V2H) energy management, exploring the potential fusion of electric vehicle (EV) batteries with smart thermostats from Resideo. The ultimate goal? To unlock a host of benefits for customers, spanning from potential cost savings on electric bills to a reduced strain on the national electric grid, all while enhancing the utilization of cleaner energy sources and ensuring homeowner comfort.
This innovative initiative comes at a pivotal moment as Ford, spearheading the introduction of a full-size electric truck with bi-directional charging capabilities, joins forces with Resideo, a global powerhouse specializing in home comfort solutions, First Alert security, and cutting-edge residential load management programs for utilities. Together, they aim to pioneer a level of home energy management never before achievable, particularly in the realm of internal combustion engine vehicles.
The F-150 Lightning stands as a testament to Ford's commitment to innovation, boasting the capability to power homes during outages via Intelligent Backup Power. Now, with the EV Home Power Partnership project, the focus shifts towards simulating the integration of Resideo's smart thermostats with the energy stored within the F-150 Lightning's battery. This integration presents an opportunity to intelligently channel stored energy to power and manage the heating and cooling systems within a home.
At its core, the project is structured to evaluate how the symbiosis of bi-directional EV charging and smart thermostats can curtail overall home energy consumption during periods of electric grid strain. This strategic coordination not only aims to minimize energy usage during peak hours when costs soar but also seeks to align with consumers’ Time-of-Use (TOU) electricity rates, automating the home's energy usage. Moreover, the project endeavors to gauge how this coordination can facilitate the utilization of cleaner energy from the grid, especially when renewable energy sources are readily available.
Bill Crider, head of global charging and energy services at Ford Motor Company, emphasized, “Driving electric is unlocking an entirely new world of personal energy management that could not only save our customers time and money, but also help support a more sustainable energy grid. Successful vehicle-to-home energy management solutions would give Ford EV drivers as well as utilities and power companies the confidence to accelerate future vehicle-to-grid services never-before thought possible with traditional vehicles.”
The significance of electric vehicle battery storage in stabilizing the electric grid cannot be overstated. Not only does it ensure homeowners’ comfort during power outages, but it also presents an opportunity to save costs by utilizing stored energy during peak demand periods when energy costs soar. Ford and Resideo envision a future where electric vehicles and homes share a common energy source, harmoniously interacting for the benefit of customers and the electric grid alike.
Dana Huth, EVP and Chief Revenue Officer at Resideo, highlighted, "The two largest contributors to an individual's carbon-emission footprint are usually their car and the heating and cooling of their home. With this EV Power Partnership project, we can discover new ways for F-150 Lightning owners to utilize their EV battery to power their home's heating and cooling and to help build a home energy management strategy that can optimize their home's comfort and energy use. By creating energy-efficient ecosystems between trusted global brands, our Resideo Grid Services team can help ensure a more resilient electric grid for the community, prepare it for more renewables and deliver energy savings for consumers."
This groundbreaking project has already commenced its operations and is slated for completion in the first half of 2024, promising a potential revolution in the way we perceive and harness energy at the intersection of automotive and residential technologies. Stay tuned for the promising outcomes of this unprecedented partnership between Ford and Resideo.
