Ford, the leading manufacturer of F-Series trucks in America, has introduced an innovative technology that uses artificial intelligence to simplify the process with just a push of a button.
Pairing a truck and trailer can be a daunting task, especially when others are waiting and watching. Whether hitching alone or with a spotter, lining up the truck's hitch ball with the trailer hitch coupler requires precise positioning and can be stressful. However, Ford's Pro Trailer Hitch Assist technology can take the frustration out of the process.
This innovative system uses the rear camera and corner radars of the truck to align the hitch with the trailer coupler, while controlling the truck's speed, steering, and braking to stop at the exact spot needed. The driver can simply push and hold a button while monitoring the progress on the large center screen display. And with advanced machine learning technology, the system can detect the hitch ball, trailer, and coupler at distances of up to approximately 20 feet. Additionally, the Onboard Scales and Smart Hitch features provide valuable information to drivers, allowing them to safely and confidently transport their payload.
The system is also part of an optional towing package on the popular F-150 XLT, which also includes the Pro Trailer Backup Assist feature, introduced in 2016, which helps with the other part of towing – driving a truck with a trailer attached in reverse. The driver just needs to turn a knob that surrounds the Pro Trailer Hitch Assist button to point the vehicle in the direction they want it to go while monitoring their progress on the camera display.
