In November of this year, the F-150 Lightning became America’s best-selling electric truck, with sales totalling over 2,000 for the month. Almost 13,300 F-150 Lightnings have been sold since the truck was introduced in May, and the success of the F-150 Lightning has helped Ford to become the No. 2 EV brand in the country. This is far from the end of the F-150 Lightning’s accolades, as the truck was recently named the MotorTrend Truck of the Year for 2023.
This prestigious award sets a remarkable precedent for years to come, because the F-150 Lightning is the first electric truck to win by a unanimous vote, and is only the second time that any electric vehicle has won by a unanimous vote from all of the judges.
“It’s really brilliant for the team that Lightning is the first EV truck to win by unanimous vote,” said Darren Palmer, vice president, electric vehicle programs. “This truck is full of firsts, and this one is really special to add to Lightning’s historic launch.”
The MotorTrend Truck of the Year award is a tough competition. Each goes through acceleration testing, tests to gauge its figure-8 handling, and 60-0 braking performance tests. The trucks also go through additional class-relevant tests, like tests to judge their capability to accelerate and brake while towing a trailer weighing near its rated capacity and while hauling a load near to its payload capacity. There is even a "frustration test" where trucks have to perform a highway acceleration uphill with a trailer. Individual judges are also free to conduct their own subjective off-road tests, frequently over a variety of road types and surfaces. With all of the contenders for this award and all of the strenuous tests that the trucks are put through, the F-150 Lightning’s unanimous win is even more impressive.
“The F-150 Lightning and its nearly instant torque with ride and handling make it without a doubt the best truck Ford has ever made. If that feels like a bold statement, consider that amongst our judges, the F-150 Lightning won Truck of the Year by unanimous decision–the first EV truck to convince all judges across the board,” said Ed Loh, MotorTrend group head of editorial. “The Ford F-150 Lightning is no less than a milestone achievement in the history of American mobility.”
The F-150 Lightning has also won the TIME Top 200 Invention of 2022 award, the 2023 Kelley Blue Book?Best?Buy?Award, the CarBuzz Save the Planet award, and many more. Ford is already ramping up production to reach a goal of 150,000 F-150 Lightning trucks delivered each year, with the hope to reach that goal by the end of next year.
