A 40-year old car disappears from public view for 20 years, resurfaces, and sells at auction for $65,000? You may see this sounds impossible, and Brian Hoskins Ford in Coatesville, PA would agree; unless we are talking about Princess Diana’s personal vehicle.

Before sitting in a private Princess Di-themed collection for over two decades, this Ford Escort served as Diana's personal transport vehicle early on in her relationship with the Prince of Wales.

Though she drove it relatively often for a woman of her stature, the vehicle remains in amazingly original condition. It still has its original paint and upholstery, and only has 83,000 miles on the odometer.

Today, the silver car bears the exact same registration plate it had when Diana owned it: “WEV 297W.”

This past week, this Escort appeared as part of the Royal Auction, which was held at Reeman Dansie auction house in Colchester, Essex, UK. Though this ride was originally priced at $40-50k, one lucky bidder snapped it up for a cool $65k.

The vehicle comes complete with a silver frog mascot on the “bonnet” — a copy of a gift Princess Diana received from her sister, Lady Sarah Spencer, to remind her of the fairy tale that tells the story of a girl who kisses a frog in order to turn him into a prince.
