It’s been a full decade since the Ford Motor Company discontinued its full-compact iteration of the Ford Ranger. Since then, the Blue Oval brand has revived the Ranger nameplate as a successful mid-size pickup model.
In addition, it appears that the Ford Motor Company is ready to jump back into the compact pickup game once again, as the upcoming 2022 Ford Maverick, a fully hybrid compact truck, was just revealed earlier this month.
The numbers surrounding the new model are really quite impressive. It’s estimated that the upcoming Maverick will earn a fuel efficiency rating of 40 miles per gallon in the city, and the $19,995 MSRP starting price looks pretty good as well.
In light of the hype surrounding the new model, Ford CEO Jim Farley appears to have even bigger plans for the Ford Maverick EV going forward.
In a recent interview with the New York Times, Farley stated “the electrification of the industry is a big change, and I think it wasn’t clear until we launched Lightning and Mach-E that Ford was going to be a winner in this new electric reality. “Now investors are betting on Ford, and what they’re telling me is, ‘The strategy is attractive, Go execute it, Farley.'”
Given the intense focus that Ford has recently placed on electric vehicles under Farley’s leadership, it should come as no surprise that the Maverick may well spawn an entire lineup of new models.
In fact, Ford’s sub-brand strategy is effectively proof of this. Look no further than what’s been going on with the recent release of the Ford Bronco Sport and the Ford Bronco for evidence of that.
Ultimately, only time will tell if the Maverick is successful enough to warrant additional variants, let alone an entire family. But it’s clear that Farley is quite confident that buyers will once again gravitate toward the compact pickup, just as they did years ago.
